A five man delegation from Birmingham Law Society (BLS) has visited an international law convention hosted by the Lyon Bar in a bid to improve links with European lawyers.

Solicitors from Sydney Mitchell, Cobbetts, HBJ Gateley Wareing and Henry Browne took part in the trip, which is part of the organisation’s push to forge better overseas links.

The visit was supported by Birmingham Chamber International Team and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), the government organisation which assists UK companies to trade internationally.

During the two day Birmingham Law Society held a meeting with the Frankfurt Bar to explore the possibility of setting up a global network of regional law societies/ bars, which would seek to work to promote the legal work undertaken in all of cities included within the network. Initial talks were very positive and the Frankfurt President will be attending Birmingham Law Society’s annual dinner on 18 November 2010.

Dean Parnell, Partner at Sydney Mitchell and President of Birmingham Law Society, who attended the event said: "This was a very productive visit and has proved to be an excellent way of forging links with Birmingham’s twin city. We are very keen to now forge links with other cities throughout the world as it is essential we promote Birmingham and our excellent legal sector on the international stage.

We want Birmingham and the surrounding region to be seen as the first choice for anyone looking to do business in the United Kingdom."

The conference also included lawyers from many European countries thereby providing excellent networking opportunities.

Birmingham Law Society shall now be looking to develop its relationship with the Frankfurt Bar as well as exploring the possibility of setting up a global network.
